Freight Class refers to the classification set forth by the NMFC. The freight class for your shipment must be correct for correct pricing and to ensure that your shipment is on time.

We’ve come up with three tips to help you when classifying your freight:

  • The NMFC is a constantly changing document, so you should look at the NMFC codes you are using and verify they are still valid.
  • Density is a key factor! While we still have the NMFC, the industry is more and more dependent on density and the rules regarding density are getting more and more complex. Please make sure you use the free density calculator on ShipGSL.com.
  • Lastly, if you are inspected and they re-weigh your density based items; make sure the carrier changes the class. This is the scenario where the carrier wants to have its cake and eat it too.
